I stopped using "hair food" over a decade ago because it's crap. Most products in the "ethnic" hair section contain bad ingredients that's not good for anyone's hair.

There are natural recipes that you can use in your hair to use a conditioner, deep conditioner, or to cleanse your hair with. I used a mixture of honey, buttermilk, non-bleached flour, and olive oil and this gave my hair moisture. I also use honey and olive oil, or honey by itself for shiny and moisture, and olive oil can be used as hot oil treatments to repair damaged hair.

Look for products without petroleum, mineral oil, or lanolin. It's hard to find products that don't contain at least one of those ingredients, unless it's a natural or organic product. I definitely don't use products with petroleum in them. Look for products that have an abundance of natural or organic ingredients, or that is natural/organic.

I can't suggest a particular hair food as alot of them contain mineral oil that smother the scalp rather than nurishing it. I know that Organic Root Stimulator makes some good carrot oil and Hair Mayonnaise. But for sure, anything without mineral oil is a good start.
